Allen & Heath Avantis and Wharfedale Pro WLA28X rock the Soweto Derby

09 March 2024, The Soweto Derby is one of the biggest sporting events in Southern Africa and a 90 000 strong crowd flooded the world-renowned Soccer City (FNB Stadium) to witness the continuation of this fierce rivalry between two of the biggest football clubs in Africa.

Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs draw the biggest crowds in SA, with people travelling from all over the country to support their favourite team, although football alone is no longer the norm at the stadiums, just like the Super Bowl in the United States, South African football now puts on star-studded half-time shows to keep fans entertained during the 15-minute break.

These shows are usually reserved for the biggest clashes, and it does not get bigger than the Soweto Derby. This year saw artists such as Kwaito stars TKZee, Dj Dlala Thukzin who had the biggest song in the country in 2023 titled iPlan and Amapiano’s rising superstar, Zee Nxumalo take the stage to entertain the sold-out crowd.

However, this could not be achieved without some of the world’s leading brands adding their magic, namely Wharfedale Pro and Allen & Heath. The audio for the show was mixed on the Allen & Heath Avantis which is a 64 channel / 42 configurable bus mixer platform featuring A & H’s patented 96kHz XCVI FPGA engine, with its class-leading 0.7ms latency plus add-on processing. These consoles are found in festivals and arenas around the world, so there was no other choice for this occasion.

For the PA, it could only be Wharfedale Professional Line Array, with the WLA28X system delivering the power. WLA28X is the redesigned version of Wharfedale’s dual 8” passive line array, that features new HF compression drivers, improved HF protection circuit, Bi-amp & Passive mode switching, 15 mm / 18 mm Birch Plywood construction and some cosmetic upgrades to the box and grill.
